Why malware for Macs is on its way

Oh, the rationalizations people come up with to explain away what they don’t want to hear.

Last week, when I wrote Coming soon to a Mac near you: serious malware, I expected to get an earful from Mac partisans telling me how wrong I was. They didn’t disappoint.

In this post, I want to respond, in detail, to the arguments that I heard in response to that post. They’re the same ones that come up over and over again when the topic turns to Macs and malware. First, there’s the contention that OS X is architecturally superior to other operating systems, that its very design confers immunity from infection. Second, there’s the perfectly reasonable question of numbers: if Macs and Windows PCs are equally vulnerable to attack, how come there are hundreds of thousands of Windows viruses and only a handful of specimens of Mac malware?

iPhone is not a Private Phone!

Researchers have found that Apple is putting privacy of its customers at risk by tracking locations of users and saving every detail to a secret file.

The Daily Mail quoted Pete Warden, one of the researchers who discovered the file, as saying, “Apple has made it possible for almost anybody – a jealous spouse, a private detective, robber etc. – with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you’ve been.”

Coming soon to a Mac near you: serious malware

Last week I showed you how malware authors have begun using social engineering to target Google Chrome, with convincing replicas of Chrome’s bright-red security screens to trick victims into installing a package of malware.

Now I am seeing evidence that the next target is OS X. That’s potentially very bad news for Mac owners who have abandoned their PCs in the belief that switching to a Mac somehow immunizes them from malware.

Security experts know, of course, that there’s nothing magical about Macs when it comes to security. They just haven’t been targeted because Windows has been such a big juicy target for so long.

But now that Macs have achieved a critical mass of success in the marketplace, they’ve attracted the attention of malware authors. According to a report from a Danish IT security company, an underground group has completed work on a fully operational kit specifically designed to build malware aimed at the Mac OS platform:

Intego Security Memo – MAC Defender Fake Antivirus Program Targets Mac Users

Malware: OSX/MacDefender.A

Risk: Low; in the wild, but not very widespread for now

Description: Intego has discovered a fake antivirus program called MAC Defender, which targets Mac users via SEO poisoning attacks (web sites set up to take advantage of search engine optimization tricks to get malicious sites to appear at the top of search results). When a user clicks on certain links after performing a search on a search engine such as Google, they are sent to a web site that displays a fake Windows screen with an animated image showing a malware scan; a window then tells the user that their computer is infected. After this, JavaScript on the page automatically downloads a file. The file downloaded is a compressed ZIP archive, which, if a specific option in a web browser is checked (“Open ‘safe’ files after downloading” in Safari, for example), will open. The file is decompressed, and the installer it contains launches presenting a user with the following screen:

If the user continues through the installation process, and enters an administrator’s password, the software will be installed.

Visto che nessuno ne parla... (
