Over the weekend, I got an e-mail from an AppleCare support rep, who was responding to my recent reports of Mac malware being found in the wild. At least one prominent voice in the Mac community dismisses these reports as “crying wolf.” The view from inside an Apple call center says it’s for real:
I can tell you for a fact, many, many people are falling for this attack. Our call volume here at AppleCare is 4-5x higher than normal and [the overwhelming majority] of our calls are about this Mac Defender and its aliases. Many frustrated Mac users think their Mac is impervious to viruses and think this is a real warning from Apple. I really wish I could say not many people will fall for this, but in this last week, we have had nothing but Mac Defender and similar calls.

Last quarter, we collectively purchased 18.6 million iPhone 4s. As of right now, there are an estimated 1.5 million to 2 million iPhone 4s left out there, sitting on retailer and carrier shelves, waiting for a new owner like a puppy in a window. Maybe the rather hefty chunk of iPhone 4inventory pushed Apple to lower its Q2 shipment volume from 20 million units to 17.5 to 18 million units, but I’m secretly hoping this figure has something to do with the launch of the next-gen iPhone, maybe as soon as September of this year if rumors prove true.

Well, this is about as surprising as the tides rolling in: HTC has sued Apple for patent infringement. Earlier this year, Apple sued HTC, focussing on the Taiwanese phone maker's Android devices. HTC has now responded with a patent suit of its own.
As usual, the complaint is filed with the US International Trade Commission, and HTC asks the ITC to ban US import of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. HTC lists five patents, such as "Method for Power Management of a Smart Phone", "Telephone Dialer with Easy Access Memory", and "Power Control Methods for a Portable Electronic Device". Yeah, they sound just as vague and idiotic to me as most other patents these phone makers are throwing at each other. Engadget has more on the patents.

Love Apple gear? Like math? TUAW's Doing the Math series examines the numbers and the science that lie behind the hardware.
The contentious subject of Mac security has been back in the news in recent weeks following the emergence of a fake antivirus package called MacDefender (also known as Mac Security and Mac Protector) that managed to steal a number of users' credit card details, and a new piece of "crimeware" called Weyland-Yutani BOT which allows non-technical hackers to easily create password grabbing webpages that specifically target Mac browsers.

A U.S. International Trade Commission judge said that neither of the two patents in Apple’s case before the ITC were being infringed by Kodak’s digital camera technology, according a Bloomberg report.
